Boris Yeltsin proposed to be conferred with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Cross of Vytis

The Government of Lithuania has approved the proposal of the Lithuania Ministry of Foreign Affairs to confer the Grand Cross of the Order of the Cross of Vytis upon the first Russian President Boris Yeltsin, (posthumously).

The decision has been taken in tribute to Boris Yeltsin for his exclusive merits in shaping and promoting the Lithuania-Russia relations, as well as for many years of his support for Lithuania`s independence and its consolidation. Back in 1991, President Yeltsin signed the Treaty on Basic Principles of Interstate Relations between the RSFSR and the Republic of Lithuania. Later on, in 1992, he signed a joint bilateral communiqué on the withdrawal of the Soviet armed forces from Lithuania, as well as other relevant bilateral agreements.

Professor Saulius Sužiedėlis: Cruel History of Genocide Still Plagues Us in 2011

From 23 March to 12 May, Saulius Sužiedėlis, Professor Emeritus at Millersville University (Pennsylvania, USA), held a series of public lectures at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) on genocide and mass murder in the 20th century. His last lecture focused on genocide from the perspective of global history and politics, the concept of genocide today and in the context of Communism and Nazism.

Lithuanian Population – 3 millions

Statistics department of Lithuania informs that enumeration stage of the Population and Housing Census of the Republic of Lithuania, during which 2 million 15 thousand persons were counted, is over. During the e-Census, 1 million 39 thousand persons enumerated themselves or were enumerated electronically.

Based on the provisional data of the e-Census and the population enumeration, at the Census moment (1 March 2011), there were 3 million 53.8 thousand permanent residents in Lithuania (1407.9 thousand men and 1645.9 thousand women), which makes up about 94 per cent of the population of Lithuania estimated based on the data of the Residents’ Register and the methodology of Statistics Lithuania (3234.9 thousand as of 1 March 2011).

Famous Anthropologist Professor Birutė Galdikas Comes to VMU

On May 14, Saturday, environmentalist and the most prominent researcher of orangutans, the VMU Honorary Doctor Prof. Birutė Galdikas will read a public lecture Orangutan Rehabilitation Program: 40 Years of Experience (Orangutanų Reabilitacijos Programa: 40-ties Metų Patirtis) at the VMU Kaunas Botanical Garden (Ž. E. Žilibero g. 6). After the lecture, oak trees will be planted – fulfilling the scientist’s dream of planting an oak tree grove in Lithuania as a symbolic counterbalance to worldwide deforestation.

French and Lithuanian Scholars – discussions

Vytautas Magnus University‘s Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy together with the Sorbonne Nouvelle University (Paris) held the first international seminar-roundtable discussion, European Union = Europe? The students here shared their insights on identity, changes of values, the role of religion and politics in the context of Europe and the EU.

Discussions also touched upon the EU’s bilateral and multilateral relations from both political and economical perspectives.
In the opening session, the VMU Vice-Rector for Public Communication Prof. Auksė Balčytienė greeted the audience and said that events like this one are an opportunity to expand the geography for the discussions of the future of Europe and the EU. It is also an excellent opportunity for the academic youth from diverse countries to develop personal relations which, in the long run, contribute to the creation of a common European identity.
