Seimas Committees on Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Promote Peaceful Dialogue Among Different Social Groups

The Seimas Committees on Foreign Affairs and Human Rights approved the Statement on the Trends of Radicalism in Lithuania. The statement was produced in response to the current situation where persons from different social strata organise marches demonstrating the superiority of their group vis-à-vis other groups and expressing intolerance to people of other nations or beliefs. The Statement aims at preventing these trends in future and opening a peaceful dialogue among different social groups.

The Statement declares the following:

“Human rights and liberties are essential and unalterable values in a democratic society. People may not be condemned or disdained on national, religious, racial or other grounds. We all know too well the anguish inflicted on the 20th century Europe due to the disregard of these democratic values. We are not entitled to forget or ignore history’s painful lessons.

US Stays Focused on Europe

US President Barack Obama is meeting 11 Central and East European leaders in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. Lithuania is represented by Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius.
There, In the Czech capital, he is due to sign a nuclear arms treaty with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on 8 April. The pact commits both countries to big cuts in nuclear warheads.

In the Lithuanian Prime Minister‘s view, the United States holds a informal meeting in Prague to show that it stays focused on Europe.
“The symbolic meaning of the meeting is all that really matters. I think the United States is willing to show that it keeps seeking new security formats and that it stays deeply focused on Central Europe. As for Lithuania, it will continue to be one of the most responsive regions regarding the security aspect”, Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius said right before his visit to Prague.

The President of Lithuania extended condolences to Russia’s leader over explosions in Moscow Metro

President Dalia Grybauskaitė offered her condolences to President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia over the explosions in Moscow Metro that left dozens of people dead and injured early Monday morning.

“The people of Lithuania and I were greatly shocked to hear about the deadly bombings in Moscow. I extend my sincere condolences to you personally, to the victims’ families and friends, and to the people of Russia,” Dalia Grybauskaitė wrote in her message of condolences to President Dmitry Medvedev.

Dalia Grybauskaitė: EU growth strategy offers new opportunities for Lithuania

he European Council approved the main targets of the EU development strategy until 2020 to be pursuit by member states through their national action programmes. The EU leaders agreed to focus on and streamline their common efforts towards fighting poverty and social exclusion, raising employment rates, improving youth education, and making maximum investments possible under specific national circumstances into scientific research and innovation. They also confirmed the commitment by member states to increase, by one-fifth, energy efficiency and the share of renewable energy in overall energy generation as well as to reduce air pollution.
